Here’s a quick plot synopsis of the original Life is Strange.

Plot summary

“Life is Strange” is an episodic graphic adventure game developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Square Enix. The game was released in five episodes between January and October 2015. It follows the story of Maxine “Max” Caulfield, a photography student who discovers she has the ability to rewind time at any moment, leading her to experience and alter the events around her.

The game is set in the fictional town of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, and begins with Max experiencing a vivid and terrifying vision of a giant tornado destroying the town. Shortly after, she discovers her time-rewinding powers when she saves her childhood friend, Chloe Price, from being shot in the bathroom by Nathan Prescott, a fellow student with a dangerous reputation.

Max and Chloe rekindle their friendship and together they investigate the disappearance of Chloe’s friend Rachel Amber, who has been missing for several months. Their investigation uncovers a darker side of Arcadia Bay, revealing corruption, secrets, and a web of deceit involving some of the town’s prominent figures, including the Prescotts, a powerful and influential family.

As Max uses her powers to help Chloe and protect those she cares about, she starts experiencing severe side effects, including intense nosebleeds and blackouts. Additionally, she has recurring visions of the impending storm. Throughout their investigation, Max and Chloe discover disturbing clues that lead them to a dark room, where they find out that Rachel Amber was killed and buried. This revelation devastates Chloe, who had held onto the hope that Rachel was still alive.

Their journey takes a darker turn when they uncover that Mark Jefferson, a well-respected photography teacher at their school, is behind Rachel’s death. Jefferson had been drugging and photographing young women, capturing them in vulnerable and often deadly situations. Max and Chloe confront Jefferson, but he captures them, leaving Max to use her powers to escape and ultimately bring Jefferson to justice.

As Max continues to rewind time to save Chloe and solve the mystery, she realizes that her interference with time has severe consequences, causing a series of catastrophic events that culminate in the impending tornado threatening Arcadia Bay. Max is faced with a heart-wrenching decision: save Chloe by allowing the town to be destroyed or save the town by letting Chloe die, as originally intended by fate.

In the game’s climax, the player must make this final choice. If Max chooses to save Arcadia Bay, she allows Chloe to die in the bathroom, undoing all of her previous time alterations and letting the town survive the storm. This ending shows Max attending Chloe’s funeral, mourning her loss but having preserved the lives of many others. If Max chooses to save Chloe, the two friends watch as the storm obliterates Arcadia Bay, leaving behind the destruction but cherishing their bond and the chance to start anew.
