What are some of the best Christian books to help you strengthen your faith?

Along with the Bible, I’ve read quite a few books on Christianity that have really helped me enrich my humble walk with God.

My book list comprises authors of diverse backgrounds, including veteran evangelists / apologetics scholars, investigative journalists, and everyday Christians like you and me.

An enduring intellectual giant, C. S. Lewis is perhaps most known for The Chronicles of Narnia. However, interestingly, he has also produced some of the best Christian books that are still celebrated today by the strength of his apologetics philosophy.

While I enjoyed each book in this box set, Mere Christianity is my personal favorite. It seems many fellow Christians agree, seeing as its received more than 5,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

In the book, C. S Lewis posits a strong argument in favor of the Christian faith. He underpins his writing with a sound measure of rationality and logic as he explores the sensibilities of leading a Christian life – and our inherent need for God.

In short, Lewis has put forth some of the best Christian books available that I believe will appeal to both new and long-time believers alike.

Like Lewis, Ravi Zacharias is regarded by many as one of the greatest Christian apologists in recent history. I especially love his firm authorial style that, at the same time, is filled with poetic anecdotes attuned to key Christian lessons.

Out of his many books, I find The Logic of God to be among his best. Brimming with passion and convincing arguments, Zacharias shares 52 essential points that covers many aspects of the Christian faith. This includes, among other things, logical approaches to overcoming doubt, an exposition of Jesus’ love for the world, and much more.

Above all, I appreciate how Zacharias never skirts around the thorny issues. Instead, he tackles heavy theological questions head-on, especially those often raised by atheists. He uses clear and concise language to express profound views, allowing readers to easily digest everything.

In short, Christians will greatly enrich their faith from taking in Zaharias’ well-grounded logical support of the existence of God.

Charles Stanley’s work is a calming balm for any Christian going through a tough time. He offers a ton of pragmatic advice that’ll help you focus on God’s unwavering goodness amid life’s inevitable storms.

I especially love Stanley’s relatable style. Above all, he shows a big degree of empathy that allows us to more easily discover God’s greater purpose for our lives. In addition, he sticks close to Scripture, properly using verses to spur our courage to surrender to our Heavenly Father’s greater will.

Overall, I think How To Let God Solve Your Problems is by far one of the best Christian books to help you build God-guided strength – while also taking responsibility for our actions.

4. The Case for Christ: A Journalist’s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus

The Case for Christ

Bestselling author Lee Strobel shares the intimate journey of his conversion from atheism to finally accepting Jesus Christ into his life.

An investigative journalist, Strobel details how he originally set out to disproof a fundamental truth of Christianity – the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He explains his extensive research process, including his analysis of multiple historical texts outside of the Bible.

I loved how Strobel mixes in strong systematic evidence with his own autobiography that gives a relatable context to his investigation. Above all, he shows a deep willingness to go where the breadcrumbs lead – a path that ultimately reveals the power of Jesus’ prophetic claims.

In short, I think this book will not only appeal to Christians, but also non-believers who may be sitting on the fence with an open mind and heart.

In addition, you’ll want to check out the movie adaptation of Strobel’s book. Thankfully, the film isn’t dragged down by melodrama, and fairly includes other non-religious viewpoints.

If you enjoy Strobel’s method of investigative journalism, I also recommend picking up Cold-Case Christianity. A veteran homicide detective, Wallace employs tried-and-tested techniques in examining the historical validity of Christ’s resurrection.

Overall, both these reads are among the best books on Christianity that help to prove that Jesus is indeed who he says he is.

5. Jesus: The God Who Knows Your Name

Jesus is the unfailing cornerstone of Christian faith. But have you ever wondered what he was like during his walk on Earth?

In the aptly titled Jesus, Christian author Max Lucado details the nuances of Jesus’ life, including his death and resurrection. The book is made up of six sections, painting an intimate portrait of his true nature as a friend, a savior, a miracle worker, the lamb of God, and other relational facets.

Above all, I found myself fully engaged with Lucado’s conversational tone as we deepen our love for Jesus as the Messiah who truly knows each of us by name.

6. Good Morning, Holy Spirit

Good Morning Holy Spirit

Televangelist Benny Hinn has had his fair share of controversy. He played a big role in preaching the problematic Prosperity theology (which he has recently denounced).

Regardless, I believe Hinn, early in his career, wrote one of the best Christian books on the Holy Spirit – who, admittedly, often receives far less attention than the Father and Son.

Overall, Good Morning, Holy Spirit inspires us to hunger for a deeper and more profound connection with the Holy Spirit in a way that goes beyond what many modern Churches are willing to embrace.

7. It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way

Let’s face it: life can get really hard. To this end, it is easy for us as humans to exalt God during the good times. However, how can we better cling onto hope and faith amid troubled waters?

Here, I believe Lysa TerKeurst has released one of the best Christian books that’ll motivate any believer to work through life’s inevitable disappointments. Sharing her own experiences, she teaches us how to push through those hard moments where our prayers (appear to be) left unanswered.

I felt especially drawn to TerKeurst’s empathetic tone. Her intimate and pain-filled recollections always keeps things real, lending all the more weight to her encouraging advice.

In short, It’s Not Supposed to be This Way is raw, yet never jaded – a beautiful testimony for nurturing your own Christian faith.

8. Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion

Confronting Christianity

“If God is so good, why do innocent people suffer?”, “Doesn’t science negate the need for faith?”, “Is the Bible misogynistic?”.

These are some of the many tough questions that most Christians will surely face from peers and loved ones. I for one think these are fair issues for any non-believer to raise – questions that demand real answers.

This is where Rebecca McLaughlin’s book truly shines. In Confronting Christianity, she boldly attempts to answer 12 of the most common – and hardest – questions with regards to God’s existence, nature, and works.

I’m especially fond of McLaughlin’s methodical writing as she draws upon secular philosophy, Scripture, and other schools of thought. Her answers are consistently fleshed-out as she addresses each issue with sharp intellect, grace, and humility.

In short, I believe McLaughlin has released one of the best books on Christianity that’ll equip believers with the means of better explaining their faith to others.

Our world is filled with distractions. So much so it’s easy to lose sight of leading a purposeful, prayer-filled life.

Paul Miller does a fantastic job at bringing prayer back into square focus. Here, he invites Christians to build a closer relationship with God through step-by-step guidance, prayer prompts, and relevant Scripture. Each chapter is packed with advice on how to develop rich praying habits that emphasise heart and intimacy over the ‘dry’ or ‘formulaic’.

In short, if you’re looking for the best Christian books that explore a fresh approach to prayer, A Praying Life is a great start!

10. Trusting God

Jerry Bridges is easily one of my favorite Christian authors. In Trusting God, he examines ways for us to cope with challenging life moments that, in many instances, may impede our walk with God.

James 1:12 comes to my mind: “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

Such trials are incredibly challenging for most of us. In this respect, Trusting God serves as a welcomed note of encouragement for Christians who want to lean further into God to overcome the odds.

The Pursuit of Holiness

In addition, The Pursuit of Holiness is one of the best books on Christianity that invite us to learn the details of God’s holy character. I especially loved the chapters that promote a healthy balance of personal responsibility and turning to God for help.

Why did Jesus die for our sins? Why is he central to our Christian faith? These questions and more are fully addressed in John Piper’s book, broken down into 50 well-explained reasons.

Piper’s succinct writing style is a breath of fresh air. Each chapter is to-the-point yet, taken as a whole, fosters a far more nuanced love for Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

In short, Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die is an insightful little book with immense spiritual implications. It works as an easy-to-follow intro for new Christians looking to grasp the intricacies of Jesus’ divine work that transcends all of time.

Like McLaughlin and Zacharias, Mark Clark doesn’t shy away from tackling the tough questions raised by non-believers or atheists. He applies rigorous reasoning, Scripture references, and logical arguments that cover a range of topics on the nature of God, human suffering, and much more.

In short, The Problem of God arms every Christian with existential and theological answers to most skeptics’ challenges against faith.

13. Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions

Tactics is the perfect response to Peter 3:15: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

With clear reasons and a well-organized presentation, Gregory Koukl has crafted a timeless book for Christians that may just open the door to bringing their loved ones to Christ. A must-read!

14. Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus

The late Nabeel Qureshi‘s testimony still holds so much power today. Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is the inspiring true story of a man who was willing to risk it all in his search for spiritual truth. His detailed theological comparisons of both faiths are absolutely enthralling!

15. The Tony Evans Bible Commentary

The Tony Evans Bible Commentary

I own a few great Bible commentaries, including Wiersbe. However, the Tony Evans Bible Commentary stands as one of my favorites.

Granted, the commentary here isn’t as detailed as, say, the six volumes of The Bible Exposition Commentary. However, Tony Evans’ strengths lie in giving very easy-to-understand explanations of all Bible verses across the Old and New Testament.

In short, I think the Tony Evans Bible Commentary is a fantastic starting point for Christians looking to expand their understanding of His Word – without feeling too overwhelmed. Highly recommended!
